He developed a passion for playing ice hockey at a younger age, has been consistent throughout his career, and has become one of the most sought-after ice hockey players.
At this time of writing (Monday, 7th August 2023), Karlsson is a professional ice hockey defenceman for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League.
Karlsson made his Swedish Hockey League debut (Elitserien) for Frolunda HC on 1st March 2008, recording 8:48 of ice time.
He was drafted in the first round, 15th overall, by the Ottawa Senators at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
Prior to the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, he was ranked fourth among European skaters by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service.
Karlsson spent his first nine NHL seasons with the Ottawa Senators and has also played for the San Jose Sharks.

On 10th April 2023, Karlsson became the first defenceman to score 100 points in a season. He went ahead to finish the season with 101 points.
He was named to the NHL First All-Star team on 26 June 2023. That same year (2023), Karlsson was awarded the Victoria Award.
Karlsson is a three-time winner of the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s best defenceman, winning the award in 2012, 2015, and 2023.
On Saturday, 6th August 2023, Karlsson was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a three-team deal also involving the Montreal Canadiens.
Karlsson plays for the Swedish National Men’s Ice Hockey Team. He was selected as the tournament’s best defenceman at the 2008 IIHF World U18 Championships
On 1 March 2016, he was announced to represent Sweden at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. In September, Karlsson was named alternate captain alongside Daniel Sedin.
